GREENCART: Sustainable Online Shopping for Packaging Waste Reduction, and Consumer Incentives Executive Summary
Greencart is a sustainable ecommerce platform designed to minimize packaging waste, enhance delivery reliability, and promote environmentally responsible consumer behavior through digital incentives. This study documents the 17-day pilot deployment of Greencart in Davao City, Philippines, with the participation of online sellers, customers, and logistics personnel. The results revealed a 66.7% return rate for bubble wrap, exceeding the 30% weekly reduction target, along with a noticeable decrease in packaging defects thanks to the introduction of the "wrap status" verification feature. Although challenges arose in maintaining consistent customer participation and reducing packaging use across all pouch sizes, the system demonstrated its potential to encourage circular economy practices in online retail. Compliance with Philippine legal frameworks further ensures Greencart ethical and secure operations. Future enhancements will focus on integrating AI-driven packaging recommendations and strengthening partnerships with logistics providers and e-commerce platforms to broaden Greencart impact.
